How to make money with free software…

for a dutch text click here.introductionthe dutch the church of finance organized an architecture competition for which a selected assembly of architectural offices (unstudio, nox, …) and artists were invited, including myself. the goal of the competition was not to design a building, but the fashionable 5 euro commemorative coin with the notion ‘netherlands and architecture’. the winner will be rewarded with a agreeably price, but most of all with the honor: his originate pass on be realized and leave be a legal make up within the netherlands.i approached the discussed ‘netherlands and architecture’ from two points of sentiment. on whole hand i paid tribute to the rich dutch architecture history and on the other hand to the contemporary quality of dutch architecture. these form also the two sides of my coin. traditionally the front of the silver needs to characterize the queen, while the back side displays the value of the coin.party side

when someone looks closely (click on on picture to enlarge) to my characterization of the queen, it becomes clear that her portrait is constructed with names of important dutch architects. on the outside the names are clearly readable, while they slowly vacation smaller to the center. under a magnifying drinking-glass all names are readable, but not with only the human eye. it is fascinating to ride out how an old milieu similar to a coin can be in this way a ‘compact disc’ of information.the tension between what is readable and what not, is also a metaphor how time shapes history. some big names of the days of old, might be smaller names in the future and vice versa. to suggest this idea, i chose to non-sequential the architects not alphabetically or chronologically but in a new way: i used the internet as a seismograph and ordered the architects by the numeral of hits on the internet.

of course this gone haywire changes over time and as such this is another time stamp on the silver besides the number ‘2008′. only the first 109 architects tailor-made on the coin, so that was immediately the selection. apparently becoming honoured goes exponentially:

in order to achieve the image i developed my own single-line font system. i let the parentage width transmute within the same character in sodality to evoke an underlying essence:

nowadays dutch architecture is noted for its harsh conceptual solicit. this translates itself in the fact that there are not only a end of books about dutch archite

Japan Getting Bored Of Videogames? Sales Down 21%

We had to read this twice to make sure we got it right: Sales of console and portable videogames in Japan are down 21% in the third quarter. The numbers are so bad Japan is dragging the global gaming industry down with it: Global game sales from July to September grew at a paltry 1%, despite fair growth in the United States (8%) and Britain (15%).

What’s going on? Gaming companies simply haven’t come out with the kind of must-have titles like Halo 3 or Super Mario Galaxy we saw in 2007. When there’s nothing exciting to play that’s new, gamers do other things (like, umm, go outside). And then there’s the recession. While videogames generally deliver a lot of entertainment value for the buck (or yen), leaner wallets mean people buy fewer games.

The real test will be to see how games fare during the all-important holiday season, which sees the introduction of two updated portable consoles (the Sony PSP-3000 and the Nintendo DSi) and discounted Xbox 360s and games like LittleBigPlanet, already reported to be doing well.

This Week’s Interesting Music Releases (November 11th, 2008)

Celebrate U.S. president-elect Barack Obama’s election win with Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement. The disc features contributions by Bono, Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, and even Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Senator McCain can console himself this week with the Abba: The Albums, the 9-CD box set from his favorite band.

Two releases slipped up on me this week. Barbara Morgenstern releases her new album BM, tomorrow, and powerpop darlings the Pillbugs drop Everybody Wants a Way Out. Both are at the top of my shopping list.

Other releases that have been sent my way that I can strongly recommend include Au Revoir Simone’s Reverse Migration (remixes), Danielson’s retroospective Trying Hartz, Deer Tick’s War Elephant, Denison Witmer’s Carry The Weight, the Postmarks’ By the Numbers, and Vetiver’s More of the Past EP.

Five remastered New Order albums are out tomorrow (Brotherhood, Low-Life, Movement, Power Corruption & Lies,, Technique), complete with bonus discs filled with demos, b-sides and live tracks.

Other reissues include the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection, which collects the band’s albums in a mini-LP format on CDs. The 13-disc Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975) completes Rhino’s set of reissues from the band.

This week’s “actors who sing” releases include Kevin Costner & Modern West’s Untold Truths and Billy Bob Thornton’s Christmas album with the Boxmasters, Christmas Cheer.

Any recommendations from the week’s music release list?

This week’s interesting CD releases:

Abba: The Albums (9-CD box set) Adele: 19 (deluxe edition 2-CD single) Alice Cooper: School’s Out (reissue) The Answer: Never Too Late Au Revoir Simone: Reverse Migration (remixes)

Making a Mint Out of Polo

0811.polo.jpg

capitalism is alive and well and hoofing it nearing hurlingham. erstwhile london banker daniel fox-davies has seen a cavity in the exchange, and is galloping on with a intend to perform polo home, back to the centre of london. and get it on the telly. and in other cities around the times a deliver. and make piles of steaming dosh into the open of it.

It is rare to see such barefaced commercialism in these caring sharing times of ours. When we picked up on this story we expected a twist: was there to be an academy set up for deprived inner city kids? Subsidised pitches for Peckham? Charitable chukkas in Chertsey? Nope. This is just about the money. Polo always was and looks set to continue to be a game for the wellied clases. Which makes it rather refreshing really. Even if it makes us mugs for seeking schmaltz where there was none.

So we take our hard hats off to him.

(We should add that we’ve sneakily watched Secret Millionaire whilst we’ve been pretending to do the ironing, and so we know many acts of real kindness are indeed kept *secret*.)(Benefit of the doubt, and all that.)

Life on Mars: Things to Do in New York When You Think You’re Dead

Things to do in New York....

(s01e05) “have you died and gone to moron heaven?” - gene scourwhat we had here, my friends, was a real theological episode. there were lots of references to angels, miracles, request and the beyond consideration of whether or not sam is unqualified. if so, is he in purgatory or hell or Abraham’s bosom? does that explain his hole? and is the old gray beard a vagrant or a spiritual messenger? total, what i really thought made the show percolate was the teaming up of sam and clams. “clams” we learn is fletcher roar, sam’s mentor, and he pops up in the medial of a potentially explosive riot, with african-americans going after puerto ricans when a little girl plummets from a rooftop at the hands — or so it seems — of angel ramirez.

Election Day Hype: The Speaker’s Race

Paul Burka Predictions

Texas House: R 76, D 74

The Next Speaker of the Texas House will be: Tom Craddick

How the heck does Craddick retain his Speakership with that math???

Paul Burka is concern trolling about Democrat unity — which he does just as much as we promote Democrat unity, to be honest — and predicting that the TX House will be split 76-74 Republican, with Craddick retaining his Speakership.

I’m sorry, the math just isn’t there. Here was my response in his comments:

80 “votes” in 2007 - 5 Craddick D’s - 5 fewer Republicans = 70 Craddick supporters

The R/D split was 81-69 crime movies on the first day of session, 2007, when Craddick won the procedural vote 80-68. Isn’t that his ceiling? Do you think he’s gained support between then and now?

Shanes rib shack

And of those 80…there are, by your count, at least 5 fewer “Craddick D’s.” Doesn’t that make his ceiling 75?

And then, you think the R/D split will be 76-74 — which is 5 more Democrats than when the last vote for Speaker was. Doesn’t that make his ceiling 70?

Under this scenario, how does a moderate Republican or Democrat not become Speaker? How has Craddick gain support, after everything last session and the McCaig letter?

What are your thoughts? We’ve got nothing better to do for a while…

Though I will have my final BOPR predictions up around noon…

Scene: Catherine Deneuve & Emmanuelle Devos In ‘ A Christmas Tale’

this will be an unpopular estimation, but we’re appease formulating it, so hang tight. now that a clip from arnaud desplechin’s “a christmas tale” (”un conte de no?l”) has surfaced online via indiwire (via spout) it gives us a suitable to discuss the dusting which we apophthegm last week, chestnut that was crackling with pep and justice and at the same time degree infuriating.we went into it not astute much. we know it screened at cannes, we knew it was apropos family at xmas time and that it was ostensibly well-received and that’s it (but it didn’t win any major awards so it wasn’t exactly on our radar, even so we did try and see it at nyff).well it turns out that critics seemed to hallow the obscure, and it received urgent reviews at cannes. “it filled me with unadulterated satisfaction,” said the new york times’ a.o. scott. “unexpected but still made squarely in the french humanist tradition, this is a film you don’t fancy to see termination, not because the people are so happy but because they are so human and so alive,” wrote the los angeles times‘ kenneth turan.about a dysfunctional bourgeoisie genealogy that heads home for christmas, but by the nature of being french, ‘no?l,’ indisputably tweaks the very -american, “coming home for the holidays” genre.but the french are nasty with one another and “a christmas lie,” gave us a bit of a headache, but emotionally and aesthetically. in fact it’s reminiscent of the brutal species subdue of “margot at the wedding” meets the astute lyricism of “the diving bell and the butterfly,” two films that we unquestionably adored last year.many critics were turned off by the ugliness of noah baumbach’s family Thespian, and we were similarly repulsed, but enthralled with the horrible family dynamics as agreeable. but much like some of the schizophrenic and emotionally-troubled characters within the film (played by the likes of mathieu almaric, catherine deneuve and her nice daughter chiara mastroianni; yes the daughter of good ol’ marcelllo), the filmmaking was similarly oblique and slanted and the editing sometimes felt not unlike it suffered from tourettes. the music was sometimes painfully jarring, and the pacing was arrhythmic.

Time to Make the Doughnuts

i had planned to do my workouts after work and before dinner/evening activities. so i discovered two problems with my plan. first is that consistently getting out of work at 5:30 pm upright wasn’t chance (surprise meetings, deadlines, yadda yadda). encourage was my desire not to be a complete hermit (hanging with friends, volunteering etc…). i constantly fought the key 60 days of power 90 to get those workouts in. while the workout is sole 45 minutes the time commitment is really just shy of 3 hours. here’s a ruin of my post work schedule:that is a 170 trifling time commitment which is just instantly of 3 hours. it’s tuneful hard to get all that in and then go out. there were some times i had some other activity immediately after bring about and had to do the workout later in the evening. those days were really tough because i’d wind up working not on at midnight and then was stuck having a late night snack for post workout recovery. in some cases i just couldn’t do it and had to skip a workout. so after much struggling i decided that the best time to workout was first thing in the moring. working out of the closet first thing in the morning has profuse advantages:so here is what the often breakdown looks like with a morning workout: as you can see put a considerable dent in the time commitment, only 125 minutes (~2 hours). i was worried encircling working unlit on a totally empty stomach but after some scrutinize that seems incomparably pleasing, honest recommended. granted the first heretofore my body was definately not happy about the change. i learned it’s important to drink at least a whole glass of water when you contain the supplement (now i positive what bile tastes similar to ;-).
